“yeah? No kidding? , this suggests that in their relationship the respect is not so established among them.

Analyzing a Relationship In a paragraph or two, analyze John’s relationship with his parents. What does Lorraine think is the cause of the problems between them? Do you think Lorraine is right? What other factors might be involved? What might the family do to get along better?
Lorraine think the cause of John´s problems with his father was the fact that he has been an alcoholic and now John loves to drink because he has saw that example since he was a baby. I think Lorraine is right because maybe John doesn’t like at all being the way he is but he owes it all to his father and that just make him feel miserable , this lead him to be such a rebel and stops him from showing who he really is .
Other factor that might be involved is the fact that they always blame John for everything and they always compared him with his older brother. What the family might do is try to understand each other for at least one second. They should also learn how to establish limits, compromises and respect.

    Analyzing a Relationship
In a paragraph or two, analyze John’s relationship with his parents. What does Lorraine think is the cause of the problems between them? Do you think Lorraine is right? What other factors might be involved? What might the family do to get along better?
John and his parents doesn´t listen each other, they don’t respect and they lie. Lorraine thinks that one of the major reasons because John is like he is, is because of his dad. Every kid, the most usual, is that they follow the sample of his parents, and John since he was little look his dad drinking alcohol , now he loves to do it. This makes conflict between his family. Some things that I would do to change the family relationship are to establish rules, respect and like is obligatory to the parents, to give a good example.

  4. 1. John feels school is boring, he’s always doing pranks on teachers especially. When he was a freshman he did rather funny stuff, he stopped doing pranks when he became a sophomore. That maybe he’s more mature now and sees things differently.

    2. Mrs. Jensen thinks she’s a nice girl, and Lorraine she’s a nice women also, only she wear too tight clothes.
    3. Lorraine called Mr.Pignati claimed they were working for a foundation and asked Mr. Pignati for money to help the “foundation”. Lorraine feels awful taking money from an old men, while John sees this as an opportunity to get some extra money. I think Lorraine is more compassionate and John is little bit selfish.
    4. Because John kept hours using the phone and when Mr. Conlan tried to call home and talk to her wife the phone was always being used. John sees this as a silly thing, since its unnecessary to put a lock on the telephone, so to make things harder for their parents he glued the telephone for them not to be able to call. They don’t have a very good relationship, and barely share anytime together, sin his dad is a workaholic and her mother is obsessed with order.

    5. He treated them as life-long friends. Because he’s always alone and he needed some company.
    6. Yes. Humans are always in need of love and affection and being near other humans. Mr. Pignati was always alone after his wife’s death, and he wanted someone to be there. Many old-men might go through this and don’t want to accept the fact that the person that was always there for them is gone.

    7. John doesn’t exactly like his parents. His dad barely talks to him and is very grumpy and selfish, and her mother also barely talks to him, and is obsessed with order. She thinks John is a rebel and that he should understand his parents, and they also should try to understand him. Yes, I think Lorraine is right. Family should share more time together, love each other’s fully and respect and understand each others always.

  5. QUIZ.
    Answers:
    Personal response:
    A) Is a rebel guy who has a great imagination, but it doesn’t has good manners.. he is disrespectful with teachers and makes a lot of jokes. so generally he is not a good guy.
    B) A very scholar girl, who wants to help john be a better person. She has a good personality and compassion with people
    Analyzing literature Quiz:
    1. He is not very scholar or dedicated for school, he doesn’t brings the best notes to his house and doesn’t likes neither respects his school. He expressed his feelings as a fresh men by making a lot of jokes or pranks like: amateur bombs and exploding them at the bath. No he doesn’t makes too much those heavy jokes but he still is a bad student. He may be a better person in the future if he changes more of his defects.
    2. She doesn’t think anything too bad, only that she critics her a lot about everything, maybe of her appearance or hair etc… Lorraine doesn’t shares her opinion because their personality is too different to interact with each other.
    3. It was Lorraine’s turn and she searched in the phones books of the city a random number and she found a name called Pignati angelo, and she decides to call him. She invented the lie that she was working in a caritative company named L & J funds, the man sounded old and enjoyed the call. And it finished inviting Lorraine an john to his house to donate ten dollars. John feels like that was going to be a good prank and also liked the idea that he was going to receive money. Instead Lorraine didn’t want to take money from an old man, she thought that it was incorrect but in the end john finished convincing her. The feeling of both of them are really different.
    4. Because in that house there is limited telephone service and he though that john will abuse of the telephone so he put a lock to the telephone so only him can use it when he needs it. John didn’t putted attention about that, he just ignored. This shows that their relationship isn’t good, just because the don’t talk to much and because they don’t trust in each other.
    5. Very good and attentive, when they arrived he was very happy and share with them a cup of wine, he talked a lot and show a collection of pigs to them, when they were living it was an expression on his face that make some one think he would cry. Maybe he doesn’t receives to much visits and also because ‘’her wife is at california’’ but that doesn’t seems to be true.
    Evaluate and connect.
    6. Not to much. Because he affirms that his wife is at California in a trip, but when he talks about her he seems that he is going to cry. That makes me think that she can be in California but because she doesn’t loves him any more or because maybe she died.
    Literature and writing
    Analyzing a relationship
    A) Their relationship is pretty bad, they don’t talk and have a good time the three of them. Lorrain thinks that maybe the problem can be that his father is an alcoholic that drank a lot in the past and maybe john got affected morally about the attitude of his dad. Lorraine is not tottaly right because we cant say that john’s father is an alcoholic if it is not 100 percent approved or checked. Other possible reasons of john’s behavior can be his mother, that never believes him, or that any of their two parents are with him all the time. They could improve the relationship by trusting in each other, spending more time like a family and love each other.

Because john was constantly hanging and talking with his friends so that’s why his father doesn’t had the opportunity to talk on his house, for example the kind of fights that they have between them like shown at the book, and on those fights we could see that there’s not respect between them.

    5. He treats them very good as like the were the charity people , but at the same time he was very kind when visiting so that’s why they like him to visit, and he treat them that way because he wanted some company and they give him that company.

    Analyzing a Relationship
In a paragraph or two, analyze John’s relationship with his parents. What does Lorraine think is the cause of the problems between them? Do you think Lorraine is right? What other factors might be involved? What might the family do to get along better?

Lorraine thinks about a bad relationship between john and his father because his father is an alcoholic and he hadn’t accepted any help to get throughout this. I think Lorraine is right because John’s personality is like his father. A negative factor about their relationship maybe because perhaps he and his father does not show much attention to each other. In order to john and his father have a good relationship they must put all their effort, and if his father show more attention to John it will be better. Also John has to show attention to her father because maybe he can motivate him father to get throughout his alcoholic problem.

  11. Personal Response

What are your impressions of John?
I think he’s very handsome, extremely intelligent, but under-confident; John is lost in a world where he feels entirely out of place. He misbehaves at school and develops questionable friendships. His parents don’t understand him and his desire is to be an actor. It is important to note, however, that he has voluntarily chosen to give up cursing, at Lorraine’s request, which shows he may have a side of his character that understands how to share and show respect.
What are your impressions of Lorraine?
She is readily able to admit she has compassion. John’s is hidden deep inside him and seldom, if ever, appears. He covers his pain by being sarcastic, misbehaving, and acting stupid. She comes to like that in him, even as she tries to change him. Lorraine is very astute when it comes to analyzing everyone, including herself. She fears being laughed at and almost retreats into herself, until she reacts to John’s silly laughter by joining in.

    Analyzing Literature
    QUIZ.
    Recall and Interpret
    1. John shows us his extreme dislike for school by detailing his behavior there. He had been dubbed the Bathroom Bomber because he set off bombs in the men’s room. The time between his lighting the fuse and the explosion was about eight minutes, so John could hear it anywhere he was in the building, which brought him great satisfaction. It also meant that any boy who had sneaked off to have a cigarette in the bathroom would be the one who was blamed by the Dean. He also was the organizer for the “super colossal fruit roll” every Wednesday in which the students would gather up apples from the lunchroom and roll them at the same time towards any teacher’s desk. He declares that now that he is a sophomore, he has given up all “that kid stuff” and only writes on desks as his criminal enterprise. He shows us his “James Dean rebel without a cause” attitude and reveals that he is close to being a real delinquent. He hasn’t yet taken the more serious steps of real crime, but he has no interest in school, doesn’t play sports, and generally hates everything, especially teachers and authority figures.
    2. Completely angry with what life has dealt her, Lorraine’s mother finds no comfort in her daughter and builds up a complete hatred for men. But Lorraine describes herself as “not exactly the most beautiful girl in the world . . . Just ask my mother.” She observes that her mother constantly criticizes her appearance, making her sound like a monstrosity. However, Lorraine judges herself as not exactly Miss America but not the abominable snowwoman either.
    3. When Lorraine sees Angelo Pignati lives on Howard Avenue, which is just a few blocks from her own home, she figures it will be easy to keep him talking and then, she can become the newest record holder. What she doesn’t plan on happening is his happy involvement in a conversation with a complete stranger. This is our first indication of his deep loneliness. He tells silly jokes that are not really funny and Lorraine feels very sorry for him. She also hadn’t planned on telling lies the way she does to this innocent old man and it bothers her that she has become a prevaricator like John. She observes to herself that this is why John’s parents don’t understand him: they don’t have the imagination that he does. The end of the conversation ends on an unhappy note. Lorraine has lied and presented herself as the head of a charity, asking Mr. Pignati for a donation. He agrees to do so and before she can put an end to taking advantage of him in this way, John grabs the telephone out of her hand to speak to the old man himself. Lorraine agonizes over this, because as she has observed before, when John starts acting this way, things begin to become very complicated.

  12. 4. Well, because of a little exchange john and he had when he called from work. He was trying to get john’s mother for an hour and a half and the line was busy. He told john “If you don’t use the phone properly, I’m going to put a lock on it.” John act like careless, something that makes parents become angry. That felt like disrespect or that john doesn’t care about that. That showed the disrespect that john have about his father, he didn’t even call him dad, but bore.
    5. He smiles and seems extremely glad to see them. With a white beard and standing on a street corner, John says, he would have made a great Santa Claus. He acts so much like he doesn’t want them to go - asking if they might like to go sometime and then asking them to look at his pig collection. He motions them toward a doorway covered with black curtains and John drags Lorraine into the other room after Mr. Pignati. He loves the zoo, he is excited to show off his pig collection, and thoughts of his wife almost make him cry. These characteristics make what happens to him later even more poignant and will help explain why John and Lorraine feel the need to immortalize him in this record - to assuage their own guilt.

1: John hates school. He acted on his felling about it by putting bombs in the boys’ bathroom, but knows he only writes on desks. This change in his behavior tells you that he started being conscious that what he does will not make his day funnier.
2: Mrs. Jensen thinks that her daughter, Lorraine, is overweighed, that she doesn’t dress good, and that her hair is ugly. She is always makes her feel hideous. Lorraine doesn’t really share her opinion, because she thinks she is not as ugly as her mother tries to make her believe.
3: During the telephone prank, John and Lorraine make Mr. Pignati believe that they are members of a charity association, and they pretend to call him in order to donate something. John feels happy and indifferent that they going to trick an old man while Lorraine feels hesitating and guilty.
4: Mr. Conlan installs a lock on the family telephone because he doesn’t want John to use the phone because he spends too much time using it. John responds by saying: “Yeah? No kidding!”, and by putting glue into the lock. Their actions suggest that both of them don’t really like each other, that they constantly fight.

5: Mr. Pignati treats John and Lorraine in a very friendly and polite way, so much that the teenagers think he is suspicious. He treats them this way because he is lonely and loves to talk to people.
6: He is an unbelievable character because he is too kind and friendly to people he barely know, and also because he cheerfully gives ten dollars to strangers although you could tell they aren’t honest.

    Literature and Writing

John’s relationship with his parents isn’t good. John calls his father “Bore” and his mother “The Old Lady”, and he always reacts angrily when his parents don’t trust him, like when he puts glue in the phone lock. Lorraine thinks the problem between them is that John’s parents are a little frightened and annoyed by John’s imagination and by his lies. I think that Lorraine is right because John’s parents always talk about their jobs, and always real things. The other factors involved might be that John has a big brother that followed his father example, so maybe John’s father wants John to be like himself and like his brother.
