Johannesburg, South Africa (CNN) -- A former South African rugby star who is charged with the murder of three people in Durban on Monday will undergo mental observation, police say.
The man, who played for a top provincial team, the Blue Bulls, allegedly hacked his victims to death with an axe, decapitating one of them. Media reports claim the player went on a killing rampage after his daughter was raped and infected with HIV. The player was nabbed in the early hours of Wednesday morning on South Africa's East Coast. Prosecutors have asked that his name not be released before he appears in a lineup. "Our fear is that if his name is released, someone might be able to get hold of his picture on the internet, publish it and then destroy the credibility of our eyewitnesses, who could be accused by the defense of having seen him in the media and not in person," prosecutor Martin Mtambo told CNN.
According to police, there have been over 100 serial killings in South Africa since 1936, with the bulk of them in the mid-1990s. Lawyers for the former Blue Bulls player want the court to determine whether their client is fit to stand trial.
The team is no stranger to controversy. One of its stars, Bees Roux, goes on trial for murder in August.

Results were supposed to have been announced Thursday; but, the Provisional Election Council asked for more days and will post preliminary results on Monday. Theses statement: A photographer that likes to take pictures to Africa (especially South Africa).

(CNN) -- Photographer Graeme Williams has spent over two decades documenting the events that have shaped the lives of millions in Africa. From the path towards democracy in his native South Africa, Williams' images have shed light on some of the continent's struggles during the modern era. But for "The Edge of Town" -- a study of South Africa's marginalized communities -- Williams moved away from his conventional documentary approach in an attempt to convey the "complex and conflicting" feelings he has towards his country. So, out went standing back and training his lens from a wider view as Williams traveled to edge-of-town communities. "So the photographs are very intimate, in that I am right inside what's happening rather than sitting back and looking in." Williams elected to shoot his subjects in low sunlight -- either at the beginning or end of the day -- with inky shadows stretching across many of the scenes which contrast neatly with the vibrant saturated colors, helping create a more dramatic mood, he says. 20. Chefs prepare 10,000 canapes for royal couple's wedding reception

    SUMMARY 1

Guests at Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton are expected to devour almost 10,000 canapes at the lunchtime reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. The 600 guests invited back to Buckingham Palace after the royal wedding will be served with canapes in the spectacular state rooms. Canapes, I have been informed, are delicious morsels that can be eaten in one bite. There will be 10 or 12 savoury varieties and five or six sweet ones. Some will be hot, some will be cold -- and all have been approved by the prince and his bride-to-be. Producing so many tempting and elegant canapes is a challenge for the Buckingham Palace staff.
The canapes will be laid out on trays and carried from the kitchens in the basement to the state rooms in the west wing overlooking the garden. I understand that reception guests will include senior British politicians, Commonwealth Prime Ministers, Governors General of the realms and most royal heads of state. Close family and friends are also invited and will go on to a sit-down dinner and dance in the evening hosted by Prince Charles. Everything about the reception is designed to impress the guests. More than a million people are expected to fill out the road in front of the palace to witness what's set to become an iconic moment in British history.

  21. Canada arrests Somalia-bound man on terror charge

A man who was arrested on terror charges at a Toronto airport Tuesday was on his way to Somalia to join a militant group there, according to Canadian police. Mohamed Hassan Hersi was arrested at Pearson International Airport as he boarded a plane to Cairo, Egypt, said Inspector Keith Finn of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at a press conference Wednesday. Police allege that his final destination was Somalia, where he planned to join al Shabaab, a group identified by both the United States and Canada as a terrorist organization. He was charged under Canada's anti-terrorism law for attempting to participate in terrorist activity and for providing counsel to a person to participate in a terrorist activity, said Finn, who heads the RCMP's Ontario Integrated National Security Enforcement Team. "Al Shabaab is a listed terrorist entity because of their attacks against innocents in support of their extremist, radical ideology," Finn said. "Any participation with that group would constitute an offense." The arrest was the culmination of a six-month investigation of Hersi known by police as "Project Severe." Police have seized evidence from Hersi but would not elaborate on what items were taken. "There was nothing within the investigation that would suggest a direct threat to Canadians within Canada," Finn said.

  26. Prince William won't wear a wedding band.

    SUMMARY 1
For her, a band of royal gold. For him ... a bare ring finger!
Prince William is going to eschew the modern-day tradition of men wearing wedding bands.
"There is only going to be one ring, in accordance with the couple's wishes."
A tiny amount of gold mined from the Welsh mountains has been kept in the royal vaults since it was originally presented to William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.
The Queen has "given a piece of the gold that has been in the family for many years to Prince William as a gift," a palace source says.
Worth noting: Prince Charles does wear a wedding band -- sometimes spotted underneath his signet ring.

Tests of milk samples taken last week in Spokane, Wash. indicate the presence of radioactive iodine from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, but at levels far below those at which action would have to be taken, the Environmental Protection Agency said on Wednesday. These types of findings are to be expected in the coming days and are far below levels of public health concern, including for infants and childrenLevels of iodineentering the air can be very diluted, but if the iodine is deposited on grass eaten by cows, the cows will reconcentrate it in their milk . This is mainly a concern with fresh milk, not for dairy products that are stored before consumption. Iodine has a half-life of eight days, meaning that every eight days it loses half its strength. The problem arises when materials that emit beta particles are ingested or inhaled. In the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986, the biggest health effect was cases of thyroid cancer, especially in children living near the nuclear plant in Ukraine.

There are a little things you ought to know about keeping primates as pets. They are long-lived, and they need care and development every day for a lifespan that could stretch into decades. There's at least some risk of disease transmission to humans.
Those, of course, are just the human-centric reasons why people shouldn't keep primates as pets, ignoring the (still being researched) harmful effects on the primates themselves.
Arkansas legislators seem to be getting that, and earlier this week, the Arkansas Senate passed a bill banning the ownership of primate as pets. That bill, SB 901, is up before the Arkansas House for consideration.
It's unlucky, but a lot of people are just enamored with baby monkeys. The problematic is, baby monkeys eventually grow up to be adult monkeys.
It doesn't have to be that way, but the only solution is to prevent people from owning primates as pets.
Born Free USA has been preaching that gospel for years. They've been a leader in caring primates, mainly when it comes to raising awareness of the inherent problems and dangers of primates as pets.
It looks like they've got an ally in State Senator Percy Malone, who marked SB 901. His bill bans private ownership of primates, as well as breeding and sales to other private owners.
Arkansas has a status as being perhaps not the most progressive state when it comes to animal protection laws, but this is a step in the correct direction.
