  2. PART 1 BY PAOLA PEREZ

How did you react to John’s news about Mrs. Pignati? Why?
I wasn’t surprised because I had already inferred that Mrs. Pignati was dead because of the way Mr. Pignati reacted when she was mentioned in some conversation.

    1. Why does Lorraine dislike the Baron Park Zoo? In what ways is her life similar to that of the zoo animals?
Because she dislikes the fact that the animals at the zoo had to be behind glass and bars so a lot of people can go to stare them. This is similar to her life because her mother is like a glass or the bars at the zoo. She always prevents Lorraine from doing what she wanted. She didn’t let Lorraine to be free and to make her own decisions.

    2. Briefly describe the three omens that Lorraine refers to in chapter 6. What do the omens have in common?
The first omen occurred when she went to buy a bag of peanuts and the lady didn’t understood at first how many bags of peanuts she wanted .The second omen occurred when she was attacked by a peacock .The third omen occurred when she went into the mammal building and a little child stare at her while she was staring at the bat cage.
The three omens have in common that they three showed to Lorraine that things were not going to work out as she expected that day.

    3. What is so unusual about Mr. Pignati’s best friend? What does Mr. Pignati’s choice of friend suggest about his life?
It is unusual that his best friend was a baboon. This issue suggests that what really matters is not who or what is your friend, but what really does is how special you feel about that friend.

    5. What lie does Mr. Pignati tell about his wife? In your opinion, why does he lie? Support your opinion with evidence from the novel.
He said that his wife was visiting his sister in California but the truth was that she was dead. In my opinion he lie because it was too much for him to accept that his wife was dead. I said this because in many occasions he talked about his wife like if she was alive.
    Example:
    John: - Who is this?
Pigman: - My wife Conchetta, he said, in her confirmation dress.
    (pg 70)

    6. How does Mr. Pignati react when the salesclerk thinks that Lorraine is his daughter? What does the reaction tell you about Mr. Pignati’s feelings for Lorraine?

Yes I agree with the reviewers, these dialogues do seem real to me because the language used is simple and the character´s tone is a very fresh and young one. It is used the everyday language of people, especially young people, in this novel.

In a paragraph or two, analyze why John and Lorraine become friends with Mr. Pignati. What do you think Mr. Pignati add to their lives?

This lesson was that true happiness doesn’t reside in perfection, but rather in sharing your life with people that makes you feel special.

Because she didn’t like to see those animals behind some bars o a glass with people starring at them, and just to look at the animals that are over there against their will. He invented, that his wife was visiting his sister at California, when the really truth was that his wife was dead, so what think of this is that he told that because he doesn’t wanted to accept the conditions of his wife at that moment.
    Example: (pg 70)
    John: - Who is this?
There was a pause. Then the smile faded off the pigman’s face. He took the picture from her and moves over to the stuffed armchair and sat down.

  10. Personal response:
John had already said that Mr. Pignati was dead at the beginning of the book so I didn’t think it was surprising.
    Analyzing Literature
    1) Lorraine doesn’t like the Baron Park Zoo because she doesn’t thinks it is appropriate that animals stand behind glass or bars just so people stare and them and she also especially hates the Baron Park Zoo because she thinks the attendants are not intelligent. Her life is similar to that because her mother always watches how she looks and that makes Lorraine feel as she was an animal in the zoo.
    2) The first omen is that an attendant treats her bad. The second omen is that a peacock attacks her, and the third omen is that a little kid looks at her, in the bat cages, he made her feel like she was one of the bats. The omens have one thing n common: Lorraine feels hated by some people (and animals).
    3) Mr. PignatI’s best friend is a baboon called Bobo. This suggest that Mr. Pignati does not have friends.
    4) Mr. Conlan owns a business that sells lots, and he wants John to share half of it with his big brother. Jjhn says he doen’t want to do that, and tells his father he wants to be an actor. He says so because he doesn’t want to be someone else in the mass but just himself.
    5) Mr. Pignati lies by saying that his wife is on a trip to California, but actually she is dead. I think he lies so that he tries to relief the pain that his wife’s absence.
    6) Mr. Pignati feels sad because Lorraine said that she wasn’t his daughter, but when she sees her face she says that she is his niece. The reaction of Mr. Pignati shows that he cares a lot about Lorraine, and that he considers her as his daughter.
    Evaluate and Connect
    7) The dialogues in The Pigman seem very real to me because they use common language.
    8) John shows his individuality by smoking and drinking beer. If he was a student today, he would stop drinking and smoking and he would understand why
Literature and Writing: I think that Lorraine and John are friends with Mr. Pignati because he treats them with respect and equality, and he makes them feel special and more mature.
