  1. Still No Justice for Lesbian Hate Crime Victims Six Months After Home Burned Down
    by Michael Jones

It's been more than six months now since Carol Ann and Laura Stutte came home from a weekend anniversary trip to Nashville, to find their Vonore, Tennessee home burned to the ground.
Well, that and an adjacent garage, where in big, black, spray-painted letters was the word "QUEERS.
First comes frustration with local law enforcement officers and state fire marshals, who have yet to say whether they've investigated this fire as an arson. Then comes frustration with the FBI, who won't confirm or deny whether they're investigating the fire as a hate crime.
And then there's visceral frustration with the couple's insurance company -- American National Property and Casualty -- which has not only failed to pay the Stuttes' claim on their burned down property, but continues to charge the couple for insurance payments on their residence.
. The paper spoke with the couple's lawyer, Margaret Held, who notes that there's frustration with how everything -- from whether the crime is being investigated as a hate crime, to the lack of response from American National Property and Casualty -- is being dragged out.
We're talking about a house being burned to the ground, in by what all accounts looks like a vicious hate crime. What could be the reason for American National to drag its feet? The Knoxville paper tried to find out, and the company's attorney simply said "he's not authorized to discuss the issue."

  3. Fitness for Women Magazine Publishes Dietary Advice from Big Ag

    SUMMARY BY: PAOLA PEREZ

A British magazine call fitness for women has recently published an article about the ventures of eating meat. The article assures that people that eat meat, has a higher amount of calcium and vitamin c. It also says that vegetarians don’t receive many nutrients or vitamins from vegetables as they do from the meat. A vegetarian can say to you that vegetables gave you all the nutrients and vitamins you need without the need of consuming fat, cholesterol and also without the suffering of an animal. The bad part of this story is that the magazine provides a link called meatandhealth.com. In this web page it is assured that meat gives you every nutrient you need in your every day diet in order to be healthy. This web was published by the biggest factory farming organization in Britain. It was very irresponsible from the magazine to get and give information taken from that source. But the truth is that meat is not essential in a human diet. An American magazine assures that a person can be wealthy just by eating vegetables. A fortunately the magazine has realized that they should get their information from other types of sources and also that Big Ag isn’t an authority on dietary health.

  8. In the Fight Against Hunger, One Farmer Leads the Way
by Oxfam America · March 08, 2011 · HUMAN RIGHTS

As a Haitian farmer, Jacqueline Morette knows about challenges. Although about half of Haiti’s workforce (including 75 percent of low-income Haitians), relies on agriculture to survive, just one farmer in ten has access to irrigation.
“Most Haitians are food insecure,” said Morette during a US speaking tour last October. “A lot of our kids are malnourished.”
As Morette explained, it’s also hard for Haitian farmers to earn an income by selling their crops. Roads are bad, and food can spoil on the way to the market. Fluctuating food prices -mean that growers might not get a fair price.

  10. Big Tobacco Vs Lance Armstrong
    by: Dan Peterson

It seems like a logical win-win plan to fight cancer. The California Cancer Research Act is advocating raising the excise tax on a pack of cigarettes by $1 in a voter referendum scheduled for the next statewide ballot. If approved, the initiative could raise between $600-$750 million per year for cancer research, education and smoking cessation programs for California residents. Seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong, joined the cause last month. "Well, I continue to be a person, as a cancer survivor, who hates this disease," said Armstrong. "I hate cancer. It's real simple. And no matter what we have to do in any state, in any country, to help fight the disease, then we'll do it." Philip Morris USA, the nation's largest cigarette manufacturer and home of the Marlboro Man, has created a new Political Action Committee (PAC) to fight the additional tax, claiming it is a regressive tax hurting both low-income smokers and the merchants that sell their products. David Sutton, a spokesman for Philip Morris parent company Altria Group, told the Sacramento Bee that the PAC was created "so that we may explore and evaluate our options regarding this measure. California Senate and cancer survivor, Don Perata said, “I’m not surprised Big Tobacco is starting to throw money against us. “Big Tobacco’s pattern is to cultivate front groups and surrogates to side with them, from business leaders to public safety organizations," he continued. "It’s all part of a smokescreen to divert attention from the real issue – cigarettes and the terrible toll they take on public health.

  11. As Some Restaurants Ditch Bluefin Tuna, Innovative Dining Group Dishes Them Out
    by Jessica Belsky • March 16, 2011
Topics: Sustainable Seafood • Sustainable Food
With the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) not doing much at all to protect the majestic and dwindling bluefin tuna, foodies and chefs are coming to the fish's aid just in time; towards the end of last year, conservation non-profit Center for Biological Diversity started the Bluefin Brigade as part of its bluefin tuna boycott campaign. The group has been asking eaters to pledge to avoid the fish and the restaurants that serve it.The Brigade recently took to the streets to bring attention to an important connection: Consumers decide the extent to which bluefin will be fished. If eaters stop ordering the fish, restaurant owners would no longer justify buying it, and if sushi joints stop buying the fish, fishers would have no lucrative incentive to catch bluefin. Because of the Brigade, some restaurant owners and food personalities are stepping up and agreeing not to serve the critically endangered fish, Even Food Network's Iron Chef America has enacted a ban.
Even with more and more restaurants and chefs refusing to serve bluefin tuna, the scales still tip against the threatened fish. Hip sushi spots continue to serve the species despite its drastically low population numbers. Innovative Dining Group (IDG), for example, owns six restaurants (five Sushi Rokus and Katana) that continue to offer bluefin tuna. IDG's management needs to hear from you as a consumer. Sign our petition, and let the company know that bluefin tuna don't belong on any of its restaurants' menus.

  12. Legalize same-sex marriage in Rhode Island!

New England is a region in the northeastern corner of the United States consisting of the six states ofMaine,
Same-sex marriage is legal or has been legalized in four of the six New England states.

In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage, to be followed by three more states between October 2008 and June 2009. This followed Vermont being the first-in-the-nation with civil unions in 2000.Currently, Iowa and the District of Columbia are the only U.S. jurisdictions outside New England performing same-sex marriages, and California performed them for five months in mid 2008.

The legalization of same-sex marriage was part of a campaign which began in November 2008, was organized by the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) to legalize same-sex marriage in all six New England states by 2012.

Maine was the first state to have a governor sign a same-sex marriage. However, Maine's gay marriage law was repealed through a people's veto.On May 6, 2009,
Rhode Island and Maine are the New England states that do not have same-sex marriage. There have been numerous reasons given for why New England has found such strong legal recognition for same-sex marriages in comparison to the rest of the United States.

  14. New Yorkers Rally Behind Embattled Park Slope Bike Lane - By Zachary Shahan
In November 2010, there was a heated debate over a colorful bike lane in the Prospect Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The green, two-direction bike lane has been in place since early last summer and was the result of a multi-year decision-making process, which would improve the Big Apple's cycling infrastructure. But some of the residents were opposed because they think the lane has a negative effect on the historic quality of the neighborhood. In a public meeting, the neighborhood Eric McClure said "I think it's clear tonight that there's probably an 8-to-1 ratio of supporters versus opponents, I think that speaks to how important this project is and how widely embraced in the neighborhood it is."(1) Those opposed to the bike lane argue that the overwhelming presence of supporters was due to the activist efforts of NYC's clean transportation advocacy group, Transportation Alternatives, but even if this group hadn't gotten involved in this project, it is clear there is overwhelming support for the new street design, which has improved safety on the street.

In January, Nally also tortured and killed 29 dogs, most of them puppies. He made his ex-girlfriend watch the horrendous murders, then forced her to clean up the mess.

Three puppies were found alive when a SWAT team converged on the house. They were slated for death following acts of torture. Along with the 29 other dogs, these puppies had been obtained from classified ads for free or very little money.

As Nally was under house arrest for violating previous convictions, the dogs had to be dropped off at his house. Some of the dogs were littermates.

The victim’s mother contacted police after Nally threatened to kill any police officer who approached the house, along with himself and the captive woman. After Nally was arrested, police used a search warrant to investigate the property. What they found is indescribable.

Many of the dogs had sustained injuries from blunt force trauma, gunshot wounds and snapped necks. Some were skinned or otherwise mutilated. Nally tried to hide the evidence by burying the dead dogs in the backyard.

Nally is a repeat offender when it comes to terrorizing women, with a 2010 conviction for domestic battery.

Hancock County Chief Deputy Todd Murray told local WTRF news that he believes it would only be a matter of time before Nally would get bored killing animals and move on to humans.

  17. The "It's Never Just HIV" campaign warns that if you get HIV, you're more likely to get osteoporosis, dementia, and anal cancer. In a press release about the campaign, the Department of Health said the campaign is "an effort to combat complacency about HIV" and to encourage men who have sex with men to use protection to avoid spreading HIV. But the campaign doesn't focus on encouraging condom use or telling people to get tested; instead, it uses graphic imagery to instill fear. It sends the message that life is hopeless for those who are HIV-positive, and that HIV-positive people can't lead happy lives even if they take medications.

The campaign may potentially decrease the likelihood that men who have sex with men will get tested for HIV, and it undoubtedly stigmatizes those living with HIV.

Aside from the increased rate of suicide among LGBT people, HIV-positive people experience higher rates of suicide than those without HIV. The campaign is targeting the very individuals that are already at high risk for depression and suicide, as well as bullying and harassment

    kidnapping
In criminal law, kidnapping is the taking away or transportation of a person against the person's will, usually to hold the person in false imprisonment, a confinement without legal authority. This may be done for ransom or in furtherance of another crime, or in connection with a child custody dispute. In some countries such as the United States a large number of child abductions arise after separation or divorce when one parent wishes to keep a child against the will of the other or against a court order. In these cases, it is not considered kidnap if the child, being competent, agrees.

  20. Congress Is Clamoring for the Farm-Killing Korea Free Trade Agreement

Despite its relative absence in the media, the U.S.'s pending free trade agreements (FTAs) with Columbia and South Korea have been getting a lot of attention in Washington. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have been heavily urging Obama to submit the deal for approval as soon as possible. Unfortunately, like NAFTA before it, the Korea FTA is a terrible deal for family farmers.
Big Ag corporations stand to make a lot of money by increasing exports into the South Korean market, but it will drive down prices in both countries and severely thin the ranks of all but the biggest farmers. That's why the U.S. National Farmers Union, the National Family Farm Coalition, and the Family Farm Defenders have registered their opposition to the deal, along with several other labor and trade groups, both American and Korean. Meanwhile on the other side of the globe, South Korean farmers are busy rallying against a similar trade deal with the European Union. They are worried that the increase in competition from big, industrialized nations will cripple their agricultural industry. Right now, there's not a lot of public noise about the Korea FTA, but Obama is sure getting an earful from Congress. If their voices are all he hears, you can bet that this deal will go through, and both South Korean and American workers will be left jobless so that those poor, suffering, multinational corporations can make even more money.
