  2. New Yorkers Rally Behind Embattled Park Slope Bike Lane
    By Zachary Shahan
    Summary By: Carolina Zagarra
In November 2010, there as a debate about a colorful bike lane in the Prospect Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The green, two-direction bike lane has been in place since early last summer and was the result of a multi-year decision-making process, this helped the bike infrastructure. But some of the residents were opposed to this project because they think the lane has a negative effect on the historic quality of the neighborhood. In a public meeting in the neighborhood some of the people say their points of view like neighbor Eric McClure explained "I think it's clear tonight that there's probably an 8-to-1 ratio of supporters versus opponents, I think that speaks to how important this project is and how widely embraced in the neighborhood it is." (1) Those who opposed to the bike lane argue that the overwhelming presence of supporters was due to the activist efforts of NYC's clean transportation but even if Transportation Alternatives hadn't gotten some friends from other parts of the city involved, it is clear there is overwhelming support for the new street design and an improvement of safety on the street. A disable woman Elizabeth Elkind said “I am so grateful for the Prospect Park West bike lane, Thank you. Please keep it.” (1) This woman now, feels secure driving bicycle.

  3. Florida Bill Criminalizes Those Who Uncover Food Safety Risks, Animal Abuse
    by Danny Jensen

    SUMMARY BY: XIOMARA ANGULO

Cameras on reality shows have shown undercover filming of factory farms. This type of footage often reveal unsanitary condition that may threaten human’s health and also the animals health.
Florida’s senator Jim Norman recently proposed to the legislation to film some farms without the owner’s consent. Whether there are antibiotic-resistant, bacteria or other kinds of contamination the public needs to be alerted to the danger many farms impose, so that they can make informed choices about where they buy their food.
Several undercover investigations have proven to the public about the disturbingly, unsanitary conditions animals live in factory farms. Just before Thanksgiving, The Humane Society of the U.S released a report which supplies nearly 50 percent of whole turkeys to conventional U.S supermarkets.

The report was produced after an investigation which exposed the factory farm’s awful conditions. Different investigation has led Senator Norman’s proposed legislation stood in the way.

Undercover investigations have strongly said that the awful conditions of these factory farms may be dangerous and sometimes deadly for the environment.

The bill made by Senator Norman also poses a threat to free speech, as reporters were unable to speak about issues that are important to the public. Whether you’re concerned about food safety, animal welfare, or protecting our animals and constitutional right, sign our petition, telling Florida legislators to vote “no” on SB 1246.

  5. In the Fight Against Hunger, One Farmer Leads the Way
    By:Oxfam America

About half of Haiti’s workforce (including 75 percent of low-income Haitians), relies on agriculture to survive, just one farmer in ten has access to irrigation. Most farm on small plots of land, and few have the luxury of using machines or fertilizers.
, it’s also hard for Haitian farmers to earn an income by selling their crops. Roads are bad, and food can spoil on the way to the market
But Morette helps women farmers in her central Haitian community learn a technique called “transformation.” Women grow select crops on small plots; if prices at the market are low, they use the group’s equipment to transform their harvest into other, more marketable products.
Traditionally, men control the household spending, and women have few chances to earn money of their own. “That was one reason we created this organization: to allow women to gain their autonomy,”
    .
While hunger affects everyone, women and girls especially face an uphill battle. In many countries, women are both the primary food producers and the ones most likely to go hungry.
Hunger isn’t about too many people and too little food: it’s about poverty, and inequality. As food prices rise, global crises escalate, and changing weather disrupts our harvests, we need to act now to make sure every person can access the food she or he needs.

  6. Success! Yale Finally Takes Action Following Frat's Pro-Rape Chant
    by Alex DiBranco • March 14, 2011

    thesis statement::::::::::::::UND11111111111111111111
Five months ago, Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity pledges marched around Yale's first-year dorms chanting: "No means yes, yes means anal!" They also shouted "sluts" a bunch and recited ditties about fucking dead women for good measure.
first-year orientation will feature a beefed-up education program, student organizations will be required to have officers trained in identifying and addressing sexual assault, and a University Committee on Sexual Misconduct will be created. Ironically, another story about sexual assault at Yale was making headlines at the same time: after writing about the release of the task force's recommendations on March 2, the next day the Yale Daily News reported that police were investigating sexual assault reports at a Feb. 19th "naked party," held by a secret society for its potential new members ("pre-taps"). I guess those new recommendations can't be implemented soon enough.
Though Yale failed to take steps to properly discipline the fraternity in question or issue a firm public denunciation at the time of the incident as requested by our petition and one for members of the Yale community,

  10. Science 'Subverted' in California's Approval of Controversial Pesticide
    by: Brie Cadman

At a meeting this week to discuss California Department of Pesticide Regulation's (DPR) controversial approval of methyl iodide, a leading toxicologist said that science was "subverted” in the process and that health repercussions will be significant. John Froines, a professor of environmental science at UCLA's School of Public Health and chair of California's Scientific Review Panel, said "it is painful for me personally and professionally to have to report the science was subverted in the DPR approval."
A fumigant used to control bacteria, pests and weeds from growing in the soil, methyl iodide was introduced as a substitute for methyl bromide, which causes damage to the ozone layer. Methyl iodide doesn't harm ozone but is considered to be much more toxic to health. After California regulators approved the pesticide, which will mainly be used on strawberry fields, environmentalists the assembly heard testimony from both sides of the debate this past Tuesday. Health concerns have made the chemical controversial since its original introduction. It was first approved by the Bush Administration in 2007. California has its own review process, so when the chemical was being considered for use in the state it s.et up an independent review panel in addition to a review by staff scientists. As covered on the Sustainable Food blog, the pesticide is officially registered, but won't be used until strawberry season in the spring.

  11. Exodus International openly admits that they believe people can be "freed" from homosexuality through the "power of Jesus Christ" and through the practice of "ex-gay therapy." Every major medical and scientific organization said that the "conversion therapy" that Exodus promotes for LGBT people is severely damaging to self-esteem and mental health. So why is Apple continuing to give Exodus a platform to champion to "ex-gay" myth, by allowing the group to run an iPhone app with the goal of "converting" gay youth?;Truth Wins Out was one of the first organizations to notice the Exodus International iPhone app, and to document just how damaging and harmful the work of Exodus has been to LGBT people around the globe. Among them include Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN -- and yes, that Pat Robertson who suggested that Haiti deserved the January 2010 earthquake because of its lack of a Christian identity). But the interview is interesting nonetheless, because it features Jeff Buchanan, a staff member of Exodus International, openly saying that the group wants to use the Apple and iTunes platform to reach youth who are "struggling" with their sexuality.
Does Apple really want to be the vehicle that allows this to happen?
"What we're wanting is simply the right and opportunity to be able to have ...equal representation on the iTunes platform within Apple to represent our biblical worldview of heterosexuality," said Buchanan. You hear that Apple? They're using your platform to reach LGBT kids, to tell them that there's no room for homosexuality in the world, and to "respond" to homosexuality with "conversion" and dangerous "ex-gay therapy" that has been widely debunked all throughout the world. Why allow them to do this?
You've also got to love how Buchanan uses this segment on CBN to talk about concepts like "diversity," and how gay rights activists are trying to silence the voice of "ex-gay" believers by nixing this iPhone app.

  12. Victory! Apple Pulls Dangerous "Gay Cure" iPhone Appby Michael Jones

Apple has been under pressure for more than a week to drop an app from iTunes, created by "ex-gay" ministry Exodus International. After 152,000 emails to the company protesting the app, Apple has finally listened. Not hard to see how an app suggesting people can be "freed" from homosexuality is offensive to large groups of Apple customers. Truth Wins Out, the organization that started the petition on Change. Org asking Apple to remove the app, praised the company for listening to consumers, and pulling what many considered to be a dangerous app that sent a harmful message to LGBT young adults. "Apple made a wise and responsible decision to dump an offensive app that demonized gay and lesbian people," said Wayne Besen, "The real winners today are LGBT youth who are safer and less at risk for receiving Exodus' malice and misinformation."Their app sent a harmful and particularly vile message to LGBT youth that their sexual orientation was "immoral," and that they should seek "treatment'',"This is not a question of free speech, but of stopping a virulently anti-gay organization from peddling false speech at the expense of vulnerable LGBT youth," said John Becker, Truth Wins Out's Director of Communications and Development.''Exodus may pose as the victim, but they are a victimizer that has left a trail of shattered lives and broken families. We are grateful that Exodus has lost at least one platform with which to disperse its dangerous message."

  13. Why Gaddafi TV Should Be Stopped
    by carol hillson

In Rwanda, people were incited through radio broadcasts to go on a killing rampage. In a mere 100 days nearly a million Rwandans had been hacked to death by machetes, their corpses littering the roadside.
Gaddafi has gone on State TV repeatedly and called protesters rats, dogs and traitors. In various speeches he’s said they are drunk and on pills, working with Al Qaeda, foreign agitators and American invaders coming to steal Libyan oil. He encourages followers to search every alley, invade every home and murder those who oppose him. He pledges himself to show them no mercy.
Saif Gaddafi uses state TV to threaten citizens to give up their demands that Gaddafi step down. He warned in a rambling and ominous speech that the streets would run with blood.

  15. A satelitle phone.

It’s when you are out of cellphone range and farthest from help when you’re going to need urgent assistance. Think of being aboard a boat sinking at sea, or getting lost in the woods, or crashing a motorcycle in the desert while on a camping trip.

That’s what satellite phones are for — they send a signal directly to a satellite from anywhere with a clear view of the sky without need of a cell tower. But with per-minute fees of $1 or more (sometimes a lot more), you’ll still need a regular mobile phone for everyday use. That means you need two phones. Just what you want when hiking — two weighty pieces of hardware to tote.

But now there is a hybrid mobile-satellite phone, a single device that can connect to either network. Called the Terre sar genus this phone is available through ATIt for $1,070 ($800 for small business and government customers).

    BULLYING

Bullying is a form of abuse. It involves repeated acts over time attempting to create or enforce one person's (or group's) power over another person (or group) , thus an "imbalance of power". The "imbalance of power" may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a target. Bullying consists of three basic types of abuse – emotional, verbal and physical. It typically involves subtle methods of coercion such asintimidation. Bullying ranges from simple one on one bullying to more complex bullying in which the bully may have one or more 'lieutenants' who may seem to be willing to assist the primary bully in his bullying activities. Bullying can occur in any context in which human beings interact with each other. This includes school, church, family, the workplace, homeand neighborhoods. It is even a common push factor in migration. Bullying can exist between social groups, social classes and even between countries.
