  6. Living Legend Tries to Make a Living
    By BEN SISARIO
    Published: March 29, 2011

Aside from musicians, record collectors and D.J.’s, the name Clyde Stubblefield does not make many ears perk up. That is because he was the featured player on “Funky Drummer,” a 1970 single by James Brown whose 20-second drum solo has become, by most counts, the most sampled of all beats. The early rappers almost never gave credit or paid for the sample, and if they did, acknowledgement (and any royalties) went to Brown, who is listed as the songwriter.
A new project tries to capture at least some royalties for him. By filling out a basic licensing form, anyone willing to pay royalties of 15 percent on any commercial sales — and give credit — can borrow the sound of one of the architects of modern percussion. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., Mr. Stubblefield was first inspired by the industrial rhythms of the factories and trains around him, and he got his start playing with regional bands. You might expect Mr. Stubblefield, who has appeared on some of the greatest drum recordings in history, to have gone on to fame, or at least to a lucrative career playing sessions. Alan Leeds, whose time as Brown’s tour director overlapped with Mr. Stubblefield’s period in the band, remembers him as a gifted but not terribly ambitious musician. The technology and conventions of sampling — isolating a musical snippet from one recording and reusing it for another — also kept him from greater recognition. The lack of recognition has bothered Mr. Stubblefield more than the lack of royalties, he said, although that stings too. In 2002 Mr. Stubblefield had a tumor in his kidney removed, and now he suffers from end-stage renal disease. He qualifies for Medicare but has no additional health insurance.

  7. Amazon Cloud Player lets you play your music from anywhere

    SUMMARY 1
Amazon has just entered the streaming music business with the launch of Cloud Player, a music player that lets anyone upload their music to Amazon's servers and play them via the web or Android. It's $1 per GB after that. Cloud Player comes in two flavors, an app for the web and an Android app counterpart. Both players allow users to upload their music, create playlists and organize their music. And because it's a cloud-based platform, users can access their music and settings from any compatible computer or Android device. The most comparable service to Cloud Drive is probably Grooveshark, which also lets you upload your music, though Amazon has several major advantages in its MP3 store, its longstanding payment system and its stronger brand recognition. Google and Apple have been rumored to be hard at work on their own cloud-based players, but it looks like Amazon beat them to the punch. Amazon's Cloud Player will certainly face a stiff challenge when they launch their own streaming music services, especially given Google's control over Android and Apple's control over iPhone and iTunes.

  8. “Thought-provoking technology makes music with mind power”

A new computer system which plays music using brainpower alone is being developed by researchers in the UK with the aim of helping people suffering from severe physical disabilities.
The brain-computer music interface, which creates music in response to electrical impulses given off in the brain, was recently tested on a patient suffering from Locked-in Syndrome.
Eduardo Miranda, a composer and computer music specialist from the UK's University of Plymouth, created four icons which flash at different frequencies on a computer monitor.
When a person looks at a flashing light at a certain frequency, this shows up in an electroencephalograph, which is an instrument that measures neural activity on the scalp.
Electrodes pick up these faint signals which are amplified and then fed into a computer.
Miranda created four different music algorithms which translate an icon's light frequencies into distinct musical processes. Looking at one of them would sound a note, staring at it would change its pitch. Working on the same principal, the other icons allows users to activate and manipulate rhythm, volume and speed.
Wendy Magee, co-author of a paper describing the research, says the patient not only enjoyed using the system but also found it interesting.
Magee says there is enough evidence now to suggest that music therapy in general really does work for people with all kinds of disability. Clinical research into Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation has demonstrated how it can help with gait problems in people suffering from acquired brain injury.

Buenos Aires, Argentina (CNN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was given a prestigious journalism award in Argentina on Tuesday. Chavez received the Rodolfo Walsh journalism award from Argentina's Universidad Nacional de La Plata. During a raucous, two-hour acceptance speech in front of hundreds of students and the university's journalism faculty, Chavez accused large media outlets of "manipulation" and said that in Venezuela today, there is "more freedom of expression and the press than any time in our history." The Rodolfo Walsh award, given to people who advance the cause of press freedom, is named in honor of the late Argentine journalist who was killed in 1977 during Argentina's "Dirty War”. Flush with petrodollars, Chavez's government in 2005 helped create Telesur, a state-funded television network that covers news from throughout Latin America and the globe. Journalists and politicians in Argentina criticized the choice of Chavez as the award recipient. "Chavez has closed more than 30 radio stations and six television channels and constantly threatens to take away broadcast licenses of any media that is at all critical of his administration," said Jorge Macri,." The award ceremony in Argentina came two days after protesters prevented trucks carrying Argentina's two largest daily newspapers, Clarin and La Nacion, from leaving the printing press. The Argentine government needs to take immediate measures to sanction this disregard and violation of a judicial ruling that constitutes an attack on freedom of the press. Earlier Tuesday, Kirchner met with Chavez at the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires, where they signed a series of economic accords. Kirchner skipped Chavez's award ceremony at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata.

A new computer system which plays music using brainpower alone is being developed by researchers in the UK with the aim of helping people suffering from severe physical disabilities. “It started as a musical project which became a scientific project," said Eduardo Miranda, a composer and computer music specialist from the UK's University of Plymouth, who co-developed the system. Miranda created four icons which flash at different frequencies on a computer monitor. Miranda created four different music algorithms which translate an icon's light frequencies into distinct musical processes. Wendy Magee, co-author of a paper describing the research, which appears in the journal Music and Medicine, says the patient not only enjoyed using the system but also found it interesting. “It helps motivate the patient to engage in their wider rehabilitation." Magee said. Miranda is also looking to fine tune his system to make it more robust and user-friendly so that clinicians can handle it by themselves, he says. But while the equipment may be complex and the task of rehabilitating lives an arduous one for everyone involved, the mission at the heart of it remains a simple one.

But while the equipment may be complex and the task of rehabilitating lives an arduous one for everyone involved, the OBJECTIVE at the heart of it remains a simple one.

  17. Hugh Jackman: 'The Wolverine' knocked back, but not dead

When "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky backed out of "The Wolverine" a little over a week ago, it left the promising comic book drama in the lurch.
Part of the EXPECTANCY for the film, in which Hugh Jackman's "X-Men" character ventures to Japan and encounters a legion of samurai warriors, was having the DEFIANT CAPACITY of Aronofsky COMMUNICATED into a commercial action-adventure movie.
After the presentation, he told EW that "The Wolverine" remains very much alive -- he's staying ABOARD, and the script by "The Usual Suspects" screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie is still in play.
EW.com: 'The Wolverine': no short list of directors yet to replace Darren Aronofsky, says source
"So now we're out looking for a director," Jackman SAID. "We were pretty much ready to go. The script is AWSOME -- the best we've ever had, which is why it attracted Darren in the first place.
"We're not going to settle. We're going to find a director as good as Darren, if not better. Well, as good," Jackman said. "Everyone is still pushing forward to getting it done."
The actor did NODDED a little impatience, especially since he's growing weary of his protein-powered, muscle-building diet. "I can't be eating too many more chicken breasts," he groaned.

  18. PART 1
Basic Constitutional Rights Don't Apply to Nevada Dog Owners
    By Ledy VanKavage

Nevada's dangerous dog law is a relic, like an abandoned silvers mine. Currently, it's super simple to declare a dog dangerous or vicious. This lack of due process is not only frightening for people who stand to lose their companions, but it's also constitutionally problematic. Under the law, pets are living property or property plus; the constitution requires a hearing before you take someone's property away. Nevada's law came into being without considering the evolution of the status of our pets. Dogs have gone from the backyard to the bedroom, and straight into our hearts. Most Americans rightly view pets as members of their family. AB 324 would also give pets and their owners added protection by outlawing breed discrimination in Nevada. As we've blogged about before on Change.org, canine profiling is not only ineffective, it's extremely expensive to taxpayers. With the foreclosure crisis, Nevada towns need to focus on economic recovery, not spending money seizing dogs and euthanizing them simply because of their appearance. This problem isn't seen only in Nevada. In the last few years, a number of state and city dangerous dog laws have been struck down because of constitutional concerns. To get law students thinking about animal law, Best Friends Animal Society and The Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction have published three lessons on procedural due process and dangerous dog laws. The hope is that these young lawyers will start thinking about using the constitution to protect family pets. Beverlee McGrath with the Humane Society of the United States and Best Friends Animal Society are leading the charge to get this legislation through.

    Sanaa, Yemen—
The death toll from an explosion on Monday, at an ammunition factory in southern Yemen has risen to 150. Eighty-five people were injured in the Abyan Province and most of the dead and injured were locals who had been ransacking the factory after it was taken over by militants on Sunday. Protests were taking place in 11 locations thoughout the country. The provincial governor blamed al Qaeda for the explosion. Also, governor Saleh al-Zawari said "stressed the importance of cohesion and solidarity to stand together against these criminal and terrorist elements who try to hit the social peace in the governorate". The explosion took place after months of demonstrations targeting Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, as well as a weekend of clashes between government forces and al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. "We will continue for days, weeks and even months if we have to," said Adel Qubati, a youth activist in Taiz. "President Saleh's tricks will only buy him more time, and we will assure that he leaves office in disgrace." Saleh has been arguing that he is best equipped to lead the fight against Islamists. Yemen has been facing protests from people citing government corruption, a lack of political freedom, and high unemployment. He also said that will not offer any more concessions, and described the opposition as an alliance against the country's majority. Saleh promised not to run for president in the next round of elections.

  22. Benghazi, Libya (CNN) -- CIA operatives are providing intelligence from Libya, where opposition forces are on the run and the defiant government suffered the embarrassing defection of its foreign minister Wednesday. The NATO-led coalition, which is enforcing a no-fly zone and protecting civilians from the intense fighting, got no help from the weather in its ongoing efforts to protect the fragile opposition movement."The weather conditions did not allow close combat support by aircraft in the last couple of days," said Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Leader Moammar Gadhafi's government, for its part, kept up the war of words. The White House refused to comment on a Reuters report that President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel troops."I will reiterate what the president said yesterday -- no decision has been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any group in Libya," said White House press secretary Jay Carney in a statement. According to the Reuters report, Obama signed the covert aid order, or "finding," within the past few weeks. Such findings are required for the CIA to conduct secret operations, the report said. British Prime Minister David Cameron told the House of Commons that he has not ruled out arming the Libyan opposition, but added that Britain has not made the decision to do so .U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton provided classified briefings to House and Senate members who asked whether the United States intended to arm the rebels, participants told CNN.Clinton and Gates made clear that no decision had been made, and Congress members from both parties said they believed it would be a bad idea, according to participants. Regarding the committing of U.S. forces to the U.N.-backed operation, the White House has said Obama acted within his authority under the War Powers Act.
Clinton told members of Congress the administration acted within the requirements of the War Powers Act and needed no authorization for further decisions on the mission, lawmakers said. The opposition got a boost Wednesday with news that Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa willingly traveled to London and told the government there that he has resigned, the United Kingdom Foreign Office said. Libya’s opposition said its fighters are executing a "tactical withdrawal" from a swath of territory they once controlled, a move that comes as Gadhafi's forces relentlessly pound them. Col. Ahmed Bani, speaking at a news conference in the opposition capital of Benghazi on Wednesday, said his forces are being outgunned by the superior military power of loyalists, spared the wrath of coalition airstrikes. They have been pushed eastward over the last two days after CNN reported on Sunday that rebels took Brega, Ras Lanuf and Bin Jawad and reached a town just east of Sirte. Rebel forces have now lost Bin Jawad and the key oil town of Ras Lanuf and are backed up to the Brega area, Bani said. Ajdabiya, which is east of Brega, will be prepared as a "defense point" if the withdrawal continues farther east, he said. The rebels have been demanding an end to Gadhafi's almost 42-year rule in Libya, but they have been facing "sustained attacks in the face of the coalition bombing" in Misrata, Ras Lanuf, and Bin Jawad, CNN's Nic Robertson reported. In the outskirts of Ajdabiya -- which was recently taken over by opposition forces -- Gadhafi's regime planted several dozen land mines, Human Rights Watch said in a statement Wednesday. Human Rights Watch also said 370 people are missing in the eastern part of the country, with some suspected to be in government custody. That list includes rebel fighters and civilians, including doctors, the group said.

After a difficult few months, the Cyrus family -- dad Billy Ray, mom Tish and sisters Miley and Noah -- were photographed all together on Sunday after grabbing coffee in Toluca Lake, California. It's the first time Miley and Billy Ray have been seen publicly together since their crack in mid-February. That's when Billy Ray spoke out to GQ about how he feared that fame was leading Miley down the wrong path. In the weeks since then, Billy Ray has been backtracking and trying to make amends with Miley. Within a week after the GQ quotes went public, he told PEOPLE the comments were "explosive, and accidentally so," and said he was trying to "mend my family." Before, earlier this month, he said that he was calling off his divorce from Tish. Just last week, Billy Ray essentially retracted his GQ comments in an interview on Good Morning America, saying he "wouldn't change anything" about Miley's upbringing or her rise to recognition. As for Miley, a source recently told PEOPLE: "(She) seems happier and more peaceful in the past few days."

  26. Google snubs city that named itself Google

    SUMMARY 1

In an effort to woo a Google high-speed internet project, the Kansas capital of Topeka last year changed its name to Google, Kansas, for a month. Like, actually changed it. By a vote of the City Council. Besides, Kansas city, just 60 miles to the east of Topeka, soon will get some of the fastest internet connections in the country. Topeka's mayor could be mad about all of this.
He could be embarrassed that his city -- home of soybean fields, animal research, and, let's not forget, Kansas' capitol dome -- changed its name to that of a giant corporation to court its favor, only to be rejected. Maybe he feels like he'll lose business to Kansas City, which, by 2012, is expected to have Google-installed internet connections that are 100 times faster than the national average. He never assumed Topeka's name-changing stunt would win the project. And plenty of other mayors flailed unsuccessfully for Google's attention, too. Bunten said he doesn't have any regrets about renaming the city as an attempt to get Google's attention. On April Fools' Day 2010, Google joked that it had changed its name to Topeka as a sort of hat tip.

    SUMMARY 2

In an ATTEMPT to ENHANCE a Google high-speed internet PROGRAM, TOPEKA, CAPITAL OF KANSAS, CHANGED IN 2009 its name to Google, Kansas, for a 30 DAYS. IT WAS ACTUALY CHANGED by a vote of the City Council. IN ADDITION TO THAT, Kansas city, A FEW MILES east of Topeka, IS LIKELY TO ADQUIRE IN FEW TIME some of the fastest NETWORK connections in the country. He could be DISAPPOINTED that his city -- home TRADITIONS -- changed its name to GOOGLE to WOO its favor, only to be OUTCASTED. Maybe he feels like he'll lose business to Kansas City, which, by 2012, is PREDICTED to have Google-installed internet connections that are 100 times THAN THE AVARAGE OF THOSE IN THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. He NEVER Topeka's CHANGING OF NAME stunt would win theCAMPAING. And TRIED WITHOUT SUCCESS for Google's attention, too. Bunten said he HAS NO REPENTANCE about CHANGING THE NAME the city TRYING to get Google's attention.

  27. State and federal health officials are investigating the deaths of nine patients at Alabama hospitals who were all given an intravenous nutritional supplement that investigators have found was contaminated by bacteria.
Ten other patients who received the supplement also were sickened by the bacteria, called Serratia marcescens, which is most commonly found in water, including some tap water, and sometimes in bathrooms. Dr. Alexander J. Kallen, a medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the investigation into the outbreak at six Alabama hospitals would not conclude for at least a week.
On Wednesday, the pharmacy’s unmarked office in a business park was dark, with a “closed” sign hanging on the door. Workers in neighboring offices said they had seen the firm’s principal arrive that morning, but he did not respond to repeated calls or knocks.
Alisha Miskelley, a supervisor for a contact lens distributor located across the parking lot from Meds IV, said men wearing suits had been in and out of the pharmacy’s office last week.
Dr. Mary G. McIntyre of the state health department said that about 35 percent of the patients who received T.P.N. from Meds IV in March sustained infections. The first two occurrences were in January and February, she said. The affected patients ranged in age from 38 to 94. Eleven were women and eight were men.
The supplement is typically administered to patients whose gastrointestinal systems are not working properly, including those undergoing chemotherapy or recovering from major surgery. The mix is delivered to hospitals in containers presumed to be sterile and has a limited shelf life.
Dr. Williamson said the state health department had been notified about Serratia marcescens infections on March 16 by two Birmingham-area hospitals, Princeton Baptist Medical Center and Shelby Baptist Medical Center.
A statement issued by Baptist Health System, which operates Princeton Baptist and Shelby Baptist, said six of the nine deaths had occurred at those medical centers. A total of seven patients were infected at Princeton Baptist, four of whom died, and five were sickened at Shelby Baptist, two of whom died.

Haley T. Montgomery, a spokeswoman for Medical West hospital in Bessemer, said the hospital discovered that three patients had been infected with the bacteria, and treated them with antibiotics. One of those patients died. “I can say it was a critically ill patient,” Ms. Montgomery said.

  28. SUMMARY 2-Season 5 Mad Men
“Mad Men,” the three-time Emmy Award-winning drama, will not return to television until sometime early next year, AMC confirmed on Tuesday, because of a deepening dispute with the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner. AMC, which has showcased “Mad Men” for the last four summers and has benefited mightily from it, has offered Mr. Weiner a three-season deal that would be worth $30 million, according to people with knowledge of the negotiations
Mr. Weiner would not talk about the specific proposals. But another person with knowledge of the negotiations said AMC had also demanded additional product placement in the episodes. Since then the future of “Mad Men” has been uncertain. AMC has always insisted that the show would resume, but for months it was at odds with Lionsgate, the company that produces the series. Last week there were reports that production would not start in time for a summer premiere. Mr. Weiner has clashed with AMC in the past. Fans of the show have swamped social networking Web sites with complaints about the delay, with some taking AMC’s side and calling Mr. Weiner intransigent, while others have faulted AMC.
Fans took particular exception to the possibility that $1.5 million, roughly two regular cast members, would be excised from the cast budget each season. Amid the contentious contract talks for “Mad Men,” AMC’s parent company, Rainbow Media, is in the process of being spun off by its owner, Cablevision, and renamed AMC Networks. The process is expected to be completed this summer.
AMC’s $30 million offer to Mr. Weiner would make him an exceptionally highly paid producer — perhaps the most of anyone working in cable television.

First things first: “Camelot” is no “Spartacus,” for better and for worse. The latest glossy repackaging of ancient legend on Starz has neither the gleeful hamminess nor the bounteous exposed flesh and soft-core sex of its channel mate. Unfortunately the most obvious indicators of seriousness are a deliberate pace (to put it kindly), a lot of whispering and a strained attempt to turn the medieval romance of King Arthur and his knights into a parable about nation building.
Chris Chibnall, who created “Camelot” with Michael Hirst and is the chief writer, has gone back to Malory’s “Morte d’Arthur” as his source, and we can expect that Arthur is going to have to take that final boat ride to Avalon before the series ends. Mr. Chibnall, best known for modern adventure and crime tales (“Torchwood,” “Law & Order: UK”), does his best to push off the inevitable. The details of Arthur’s parentage are delved into — it’s not often that names like Corlois and Ector figure prominently in the story — and until Episode 3 the only Round Table knight who puts in an appearance is Arthur’s foster brother, Kay.
Mr. Fiennes is fun to watch as an arrogant, punked-out Merlin; he’s much more interesting than Jamie Campbell Bower, whose lightweight Arthur, to this point, doesn’t appear to deserve all the attention he’s getting.
Best of all is Ms. Green, the Bond girl and Bernardo Bertolucci dream object, as Arthur’s sister and rival (known here as Morgan). Her intensity is a good match for the show’s gloomy-doomy, psychologizing mood, and she looks great in the backless halter dresses that were apparently popular in the Middle Ages.

Mr Allen's account of his early days with Mr Gates, up to his 1983 departure from Microsoft, is set to add a controversial twist to one of the most prominent business partnerships of modern times. Now 58, Mr Allen is fighting another bout of cancer, and was last year ranked by Forbes magazine as the world's 37th richest person, with a $13.5bn fortune.
"I'd been taught that a deal was a deal and your word was your bond," Mr Allen wrote in the book, an extract of which was published in Vanity Fair. Mr Allen said he was passing Mr Gates' office on another occasion when he overheard his partner and Mr Ballmer complaining about his declining contribution to the company during his cancer treatment, and discussing ways to dilute Mr Allen's shareholding in the company.

  33. Syria tests internet freedom theory

In the wake of Egypt's "Facebook revolution," which was fueled in part by online social networks much has been made about the role of technology in encouraging or even creating democracy. Syria, the latest country in the region to announce reforms in the wake of protests, is a curious test of that theory. There are at least three ways to read this fluid situation. First: Syria is an exception to Ghonim's theory about internet freedom, since the tools of online revolution have failed, second: We're watching another tech-led revolution unfold. Third: The internet has had little impact on Syrian reform. No matter the outcome, a look at Syria's nascent tech renaissance -- bubbling long before violence in the country started making headlines -- offers a framework for understanding these current events. Many of Syria's tech entrepreneurs seem to have no political aspirations .People outside the country, however, who are freer to speak their minds without fear of government intimidation, were skeptical of Syria's motives.Fears of arrest and intimidation have been very real inside Syria. Shortly after Syria made Facebook legal, the government arrested and four days later released a blogger.´´We are the fastest growing internet user in the Middle East," al-Assad told The Wall Street Journal in a rare interview published January 31. "And this is because of the nature of the Syrians: They are very open generally ... They want to learn.

  34. SUMMARY 1
(CNN) -- World Cup finalists Spain and Netherlands both retained their 100% records in Euro 2012 qualifying on Tuesday, although neither nation had things their own way against Hungary and Lithuania respectively. World and European champions Spain only knew their Group I qualifier against Lithuania in Kaunas was going ahead shortly before kick-off, with the referee passing the pitch fit to play despite Spanish protests that it was unsuitable for international football. But, despite the conditions, Spain took the lead through Xavi Hernandez, only for Marius Stankevicius, who plays for Spanish club Valencia, to level matters with a sensational strike from outside the area. However, defender Tadas Kijanskas put through his own net while under pressure from Fernando Llorente to give Spain the lead again and another Valencia player, Juan Manuel Mata, made it 3-1 to the visitors after finishing off a flowing move with seven minutes remaining. The result gives Spain 15 points from their five matches with the Czech Republic, who beat Liechtenstein 2-0, clear in second on nine points. Meanwhile, Netherlands beat Hungary 5-3 in a Group E thriller to remain on course to qualify for the finals. The Dutch beat Hungary 4-0 when the teams met on Saturday, but this proved a different proposition on a night of high drama in Amsterdam. Robin van Persie gave the hosts the lead but Gergely Rudolf drew the visitors’ level early in the second half, before Zoltan Gera gave Hungary the lead with a sharp volley. But Wesley Sneijder drew the Dutch level on the hour mark and Ruud van Nisterooy made it 3-2 with 18 minutes remaining. However, Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt scored twice in three minutes to seal victory for Netherlands to give them a maximum 18 points from their six matches.
